I went to a concert Friday night in Porto at Casa de Música, one of Rem Koolhaas' designs, and heard pianist Sequeira Costa (coincidentally a Portuguese musician who now teaches at the University of Kansas). It was a pleasure to experience the space with its unexpected scale, juxtaposition and use of form (inside and out). I was with a pianist and she mentioned a recent conference there and that the novelty of the design wore away after several days of tired navigation being surrounded by hard lines.
My favorite part, though, were the plywood walls embossed with gold leaf and the baroque organ pinned to the wall in the hall itself. Wonder what Charles and Ray would think.
Oh. The music was fantastic, too.
